WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, severely wounded in a shooting spree last winter, says she won't return to Congress until she gets "better."

In an interview she and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly gave to ABC's "20/20" news program, Giffords is asked whether she would return to Congress, Roll Call reported Monday.

"No. Better," Giffords said, working to find the right words.

Asked if that mean she would only return if she gets better, Giffords responded, "Yes."

The Arizona congresswoman has gone through months of therapy since she was shot in the head Jan. 8 in Tucson in a massacre that left six people dead and 12 others besides Giffords wounded. Jared Loughner is the accused gunman.

ABC News reported Giffords' first interview since the shooting shows how far she has come and has yet to go.

Asked what she wants the most these days, Giffords, known for her optimism, responded: "Better. Better. Working hard."
