PHOENIX, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will be featured on the cover of People magazine this month.

The cover coincides with the release of their new memoir "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope," telling the story of the Jan. 8 shooting in Tuscon that left Giffords and 12 others injured and six dead, People reported Thursday.

Jared Loughner faces charges of shooting Giffords in the head at point-blank range but the courts have yet to determines whether he is mentally fit to stand trial, KTAR-TV, Phoenix, reported.

The book reveals that when Giffords was shot, she had been taking fertility treatments in an attempt to get pregnant, People reported.

Kelly wrote about the difficulty of watching his wife recover after the brain injury she sustained. He said he vividly remembered the day she realized she couldn't speak.

"Gabby was sitting in her wheelchair, tears running down her face," he writes. "She was hyperventilating, absolutely panicked. Gabby motioned with her left hand, waving it by her mouth. It didn't take me long to figure out what was wrong."
