9-year-old testifies to driving for father

DETROIT, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A 9-year-old Michigan girl said she drove her father to a gas station because he was too drunk after consuming a half bottle of Black Velvet.

The girl was testifying at a preliminary examination for her father, Shawn Weimer, 39, of Brownstown Township, who is charged with child abuse for letting his daughter drive him to the station Oct. 8, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.

The child testified her father taught her how to drive and that she had driven his full-size work van on the circular street of their home before.

Prosecutors showed a surveillance tape from the station during the hearing.

In one part of the tape, Weimer is seen bragging about his daughter's driving skills.

"I swear to you. She drove me here," Weimer said on the video.

"Hey, you got a car? She'll park it for you. We're leaving. She's driving. I'm drunk."

Judge Michael McNally will decide whether to send the case to Wayne County Circuit Court as a felony.

Weimer's defense attorney called a felony charge excessive, describing his client as a "doting" father who made a mistake, and asking for the case to stay in district court as a misdemeanor, the Detroit Free Press reported.
