Four killed in convenience store shootout

CHICAGO, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Chicago police say they're trying to determine what sparked a shootout at a convenience store that left four people dead and two injured.

The shootout occurred Wednesday night in the Connect convenience store on East 130th Street outside the Altgeld Gardens housing complex on the city's far South Side. Police say several people apparently walked in and opened fire. Two employees fired back, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Three people -- including a man believed to have been a security guard at the store -- were pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth person, a 17-year-old boy suspected to have been one of the gunmen who entered the store, was dead on arrival at Roseland Community Hospital, the newspaper said.

A 39-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition and another 17-year-old boy was treated for a gunshot wound in the thigh.

Police said the shootout may have been triggered by a dispute over stolen merchandise sold to the store.
