Greenville, S.C., police hunt for gunman

GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Police searched a neighborhood in Greenville, S.C., for a man who fired at a police officer as she pursued him Friday morning.

Schools in the area were locked down for several hours as officers from the Greenville Police Department and other agencies joined the hunt, WYFF-TV reported. No arrest had been made by midafternoon.

Students at most area schools were dismissed on schedule, The Greenville News reported. Those living in the blocks that were still closed off were kept at their school buildings with supervision.

The incident began Friday morning when a female police officer doing a random check on the license plates of parked cars found one that did not match the vehicle. When a man returned to the GMC Yukon and drove off, she tried to pull him over and then dropped her pursuit, following department rules, WYFF reported.

When other officers found the Yukon at an apartment complex, the original officer went there to join the search and exchanged several shots with the suspect in a breezeway, Police Chief Terri Wilfong said, describing the exchange as a "gun battle."
