VANDER, N.C., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- One teenager is charged with wounding a 16-year-old girl at a North Carolina high school and another teen is charged with helping him, authorities said Tuesday.
Cumberland County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said a 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault in the shooting at Cape Fear High School in Vander Monday that left Catilyn Abercrombie in critical condition, The Fayetteville Observer reported. An 18-year-old schoolmate, Ta'von McLaurin, was being held on $250,000 bail after being charged with a felony count of aiding and abetting in the shooting.
The 15-year-old boy, whose name wasn't disclosed because he is a juvenile, was being held in the county's juvenile detention center. Tanna said court officers would decide whether he will be tried as an adult.
The youth allegedly fired a .22-caliber rifle, hitting Abercrombie in the neck as she stood among other students in a courtyard at the school at lunchtime. Tanna said the bullet lodged in her vertebrae.
The Observer reported county schools superintendent Frank Till Jr. said authorities didn't think Abercrombie was targeted. However, investigators had yet to provide information on what led to the shooting.
Classes resumed at Cape Fear High School Tuesday. School officials said 644 of the school's 1,500 students showed up.
