Body in storage unit may be missing woman

LEWISTON, Maine, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A body believed to be that of a Maine woman missing since 1983 was found in a storage unit rented by a former boyfriend, police said.

The body discovered in an unplugged freezer Friday will be autopsied to confirm if it's that of Kitty I. Wardwell, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.

Wardwell of Holden was last seen with her former boyfriend Frank Julian before she was reported missing in July 1983, police said.

Julian died last month in Lewiston at age 80.

"Our investigation now looks to the Medical Examiner's Office for answers," Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said. "DNA may need to be used to make a positive identification."

Wardwell was 29 at the time of her disappearance when Julian, then 52, told police he left Wardwell at a motel in Salem, N.H., after the couple got into a fight.

Police said subsequent investigations led them to believe Wardwell was likely the victim of foul play, but no arrests ever were made.
