Mom shielding kids from gunfire is killed

NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A woman picking her child up from school Friday was shot and killed when she shielded several children from a rooftop gunman, New York police said.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the woman, identified as Zurana Horton, 34, had been "hovering over several children to protect them as the shots were fired" from the top of a five-story building near Public School 298 in Brooklyn, The New York Times reported.

The gunman fired at least 12 shots from an automatic pistol beginning at around 2:30 p.m. EDT, possibly intending to shoot two groups of teens on the crowded street, the newspaper said.

An 11-year-old-girl suffered a minor cheek wound and a 31-year-old woman who was picking her child up from school was wounded in the arm and chest, police said. She was reported in stable condition Friday at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.

Neither of the wounded victims' names was released.

A friend of Horton's, John Speller, told the Times she "was always talking about her kids; she was always focused on them."

"She probably saved lives," Browne said.

Police said investigators were questioning three people Friday night but stopped short of calling them suspects.

"We are looking for two others, including the gunman," Browne said.
