Truck spills chickens on Calif. highway

VACAVILLE, Calif., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A big rig traveling along an interstate highway in California jackknifed early Thursday, spilling its load of 5,000 live chickens, officials said.

California Highway Patrol records show the truck veered off the road on westbound I-80 in Vacaville and ran into another big rig, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported. There were "dead and alive chickens all over," the CHP log stated.

All westbound lanes were initially blocked as the chickens were cleaned up -- the animals that survived the wreck were taken to a nearby chicken rescue farm.

The CHP records do not indicate whether either driver was injured, though an elderly couple following behind the wrecked trucks suffered minor injuries, KCBS-AM, San Francisco reported.
