Slaying confession found in apartment

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Police in the western New York city of Cheektowaga say they are trying to determine whether a confession to a killing, found in an apartment building, is real.

Joe Miller says he found a note describing the slaying of an unidentified woman whose body is supposedly buried under his apartment's concrete floor, WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, reported Wednesday. Miller called police after finding the message in the apartment's electrical service breaker box Monday.

Initially, police looked under the carpet but found no sign the concrete had been disturbed.

Police said they would investigate further because they had not been able to determine whether the note is a hoax or a real confession.

Police Capt. John Glascott said investigators didn't have any immediate plans to dig up the floor, WIVB-TV, Buffalo, reported. Instead, they intended to focus on the note, checking it for fingerprints and analyzing the handwriting.

They also will try to find out who had lived in the apartment in the past several years.

"We're going to take a look at this, and we're going to react. But we're not going to overreact," Glascott said.

No unsolved killings or missing persons cases in the area seem to fit the circumstances, he said.
