THIBODAUX, La., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A Louisiana man is not mentally fit to stand trial for allegedly beheading his 7-year-old son, a panel of court-appointed doctors concluded.
Jeremiah Wright, 30, will be sent to the Feliciana Forensic Facility in Jackson to receive treatment for at least six months, the (Thibodaux, La.,) Daily Comet reported Tuesday. The case will be brought before a judge every six months to determine if Wright has been made fit to stand trial.
Wright faces a first-degree murder charge for allegedly killing his disabled son Jori Lirette Aug. 14 in his Thibodaux home. Lirette had cerebral palsy and was wheelchair-bound.
If convicted, Wright faces mandatory life in prison and is eligible for the death penalty.
"In light of everything, I think the judge ruled the proper way," said Kerry Cuccia, Wright's attorney. "He is going to get the treatment he clearly needs."
