Rash of cellphone robberies hits Ariz. college

TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Police in Tempe, Ariz., say robbers are preying on Arizona State University students, stealing iPhones and other cellphones from students walking alone.

The robberies of mostly iPhones began several weeks ago with at least four robberies on campus and four near campus, police said.

They are urging ASU students to be alert and to walk in pairs at night.

"We don't want anyone hurt or killed over a phone," David Humble, Tempe Police north patrol commander, told the Arizona Republic Wednesday.

In at least two of the robberies, students were pushed to the ground, police said.

"My take on it is we have a lot of bad people in our community who know we have a lot of students who come to our (city) with lots of new stuff," Humble said.
