186th arrest for N.Y. 'squeegee king'

NEW YORK, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- New York's "squeegee" king has been arrested -- for the 186th time -- for hassling drivers for tips after cleaning their windows, police said.

Greg (Grover) Washington, 37, was arrested Tuesday after a confrontation with drivers in Murray Hill led to someone calling the police, the New York Daily News reported.

Police Lt. Patrick Heraghty, responding to the call, recognized Washington immediately.

"He's the No. 1 guy in New York City," Heraghty said. "He goes up [to cars] and squeegees ... and when he doesn't get paid, he breaks the windshield wiper or assaults the driver."

Washington was booked for aggressive solicitation and unlawful car washing.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said police would take action to keep aggressive panhandlers like the squeegee men off New York streets.

"The police department has a lot to do, but we're not walking away from squeegee guys when they rear their heads," he said.
