Teen breaks into house through doggy door

EAST BETHEL, Minn., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- An East Bethel, Minn., teenager is accused of breaking into a neighbor's home through a doggy door and stealing items to pay for pornography.

Darin Paul Pake, 44, told police he set up a surveillance camera after noticing several items missing from his home, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported.

"Had he not set up that camera, we would have never known. ...It was pretty clever," Paul Sommer, Anoka County sheriff's spokesman, said about Pake's camera.

The footage allegedly shows Amanda Rose Owens, 18, Pake's children's former babysitter, sliding into his East Bethel home through a doggy door, looking through Pake's things and taking a Red Bull energy drink from his refrigerator before leaving, a criminal complaint filed in Anoka County District Court says.

When interviewed by police, Owens allegedly confessed to the crime, saying she broke into Pake's house three times.

"Using the pet door, that's a unique angle," Sommer said.

She told investigators that she stole things she thought she could pawn to support her pornography addiction.

Owens was charged Wednesday with second-degree burglary, which, if found guilty, can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in jail and a $20,000 fine.
