Punished students cleaned toilets

HOUSTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The parents of some Houston students are questioning why their children were forced to clean school restrooms as punishment.

Monica Lane said her fourth-grade daughter, Meagan Dunn, was made to scrub toilets, baseboards, walls, door handles and the floors without gloves Saturday at the Harmony Science Academy Charter School, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported Thursday. Meagan was attending Saturday school as a punishment for getting five tardies.

"That could have been a time for tutoring or going over some of the class work or something like that," said Lane.

The school released a statement saying: "Never under any circumstances is any student required or expected to clean the restrooms at any of our facilities." Administrators at the school said the students cleaned the restrooms after a teacher made an inappropriate joke they took literally.
