Obama names Shakira to post

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama has appointed music star Shakira and three others to the President's Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for Hispanics.

Shakira – whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll – is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, record producer and dancer. The president also appointed Nancy Navarro, member of the Montgomery County (Md.) Council; Adrian A. Pedroza, executive director of the Partnership for Community Action; and Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Kent Scribner to the commission.

"I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead," Obama said in a statement released Wednesday by the White House.
