APOPKA, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Former police officer Timothy Davis shot and killed his 22-year-old son during an argument with the former Apopka High football star, police in Florida said.

Timothy Allen Davis, 47, of Orlando, told police he "got into a funk" and "lost it" Saturday when he shot and killed his son, Timothy Davis Jr., with a .38-caliber handgun in the garage of their home, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Davis Sr., an 18-year veteran of the Orlando police force who retired in 2006, was charged with first-degree murder, the newspaper said.

Davis Jr. was a star player for Apopka High and also played for the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Police found Davis holding his bleeding son in their driveway, telling him he didn't mean to shoot him and that he loved him, a police report indicated.

Police said the two men had been arguing over the custody of Davis Jr.'s son.
