Woman mauled by pit bulls on Long Island

NEW YORK, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A 62-year-old Long Island, N.Y., woman mauled by a pair of pit bulls was hospitalized in serious condition, police said.

Officers trying to stop the unprovoked attack in a Merrick, N.Y., school parking lot opened fire and killed one the dogs Thursday afternoon, the New York Daily News reported. The other dog, which may have been wounded, was able to get away, the Nassau County Police Department said.

The surrounding community was warned to be on the lookout for the surviving dog, which weighs 80 to 90 pounds and is considered vicious.

Sashi Sharma was hospitalized in serious condition at Nassau University Medical Center with bites to her face, neck and arms, the report said.
