TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A former teacher sentenced to house arrest for having sex with a teenage boy has qualified for early release from probation, a Florida judge said Wednesday.
Judge Wayne Timmerman rejected prosecutors' arguments that the 10-year probationary period imposed on Debra Lafave is part of her punishment, WSTP-TV in St. Petersburg reported. Prosecutors also asked the judge to hold Lafave to a clause in her 2005 plea agreement that she would not seek an early end to probation.
Lafave, 31, is now engaged and recently became the mother of twin boys. She was a teacher at the Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, outside Tampa, when she had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student.
Timmerman granted the defense motion to take Lafave off probation last week. He stayed his decision for a week but lifted the stay Wednesday.
