Handcuffed suspect steals detective's car

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- One of three men who robbed a St. Louis 7-Eleven crashed a detective's car he stole while handcuffed, then stole another car before being caught, police allege.

Police caught up with the suspect late Tuesday north of downtown St. Louis, where he was arrested, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Officers and a police dog were searching Wednesday for the two other robbers.

Three men walked into the 7-Eleven at Chippewa Street and Brannon Avenue about 9:45 p.m., fired gunshots and took the cash register drawer, police said. About 5 minutes later, the men tried to rob a man on the street and fired shots into the air. No one was injured.

Officers spotted the robbery suspects in a red Chevrolet Impala with Illinois plates and chased the car into downtown and to railroad tracks used by Amtrak south of Union Station. The suspects ran after the car got stuck on the tracks, police said.

Police arrested one of them but while he was handcuffed in a detective's car, he managed to get his hands in front of his body, got into the driver's seat and drove away.

After crashing the detective's car into a pole, he stole another car from someone at 20th Street and Washington Avenue and drove north before crashing. Police said he was caught at 10:20 p.m. near the 2700 block of Hadley Street.

The Post-Dispatch, which did not report the suspect's name, said no shots were fired between the police and suspects.
