Woman ejected for having service dog

WINDER, Ga., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A Georgia woman said she suffered minor injuries when a guard at a Social Security office tried to remove her because she was accompanied by a service dog.

Melissa McMann told WSB-TV in Atlanta she uses a certified service dog because a degenerative retinal condition has left her with virtually no sight.

In an interview Tuesday, McMann said she was sitting inside the Social Security office in Winder, Ga., Wednesday when a guard asked to see her yellow lab's papers.

When she refused, the guard tried to force her out.

McMann said he grabbed her wrist, then her upper arm and pulled her out of the chair she was sitting in.

Winder police said an arrest warrant for battery has been issued against the guard, identified as Leroy Huff.

A Social Security representative said service animals are allowed in Social Security field offices.

The representative said the guard was a contract worker from a company used by the Department of Homeland Security.

The matter has been referred to Homeland Security, the statement said.
