HUNTSVILLE, Texas, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs has been released from the hospital and returned to jail, Texas prison officials said.

Michelle Lyons, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, told KCSG-TV, St. George, Utah, Jeffs was never in a medically induced coma. "That was a false rumor that circulated when he was first hospitalized and was sedated," she said.

He was hospitalized Aug. 29 after becoming ill from fasting.

Jeffs, 55, was released from the prison hospital in Galveston Tuesday and returned to prison in East Texas, where he will stay in a prison infirmary until he is well enough to go back to his regular prison unit. He was sentenced to life in prison last month for sexually assaulting two girls, ages 12 and 15, who he took as polygamous wives.

The San Angelo (Texas) Standard said Jeffs is isolated from other inmates for his own protection.
