JACKSON, Miss., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A Mississippi teenager has been indicted on a capital murder charge for a hit-and-run death suspected of being a hate crime.
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith said the indictment of Deryl Dedmon Jr., 19, doesn't mean the investigation is finished, The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger reported.
Dedmon was among a group of white teens who reportedly came to Jackson June 26, the night that James Craig Anderson, 49, was robbed and run over outside a motel.
The incident gained national attention after prosecutors charged Anderson, who is black, was killed because of his race, color or ethnicity.
Anderson's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking unspecified damages against Dedmon and six other Rankin County teens who were with him that night.
