Medical school gets $40 million donation

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The University at Buffalo in New York has received a $40 million donation from an alumnus but says it will keep his identity a secret as per his wishes.

The donation to the university's medical school is by far the largest gift the university has received from one person, The Buffalo News reported Wednesday.

The school has said the donor, a physician who graduated from the university's medical school during World War II, practiced medicine in a small community and lived a simple life but was a savvy investor and had planned the bequest for many years.

"This is somebody who came to UB to get a medical degree and basically felt that UB transformed his life," University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi said.

The $40 million gift will help bolster the quality of the medical school by hiring more faculty and attracting top-notch doctors and scientists, school officials said.

"It's an incredible gift in every way," Michael E. Cain, dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, said. "We knew it was going to be a large gift, but it's more than I thought."
