NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congress faces a historically low approval rating of 12 percent, a New York Times/CBS News poll said.

The poll found just 12 percent of Americans approve of the way Congress is doing its job, The New York Times reported Friday, matching the all-time low recorded in October 2008.

Republicans in Congress had a 19 percent approval rating compared with Democrats' 28 percent.

Only 6 percent said members of Congress deserved re-election, a historic low for the New York Times/CBS News poll, the newspaper said.

The poll was based on 1,452 telephone interviews conducted Sept. 10-15. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
