LAKEWOOD, Ohio, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich says he will seek re-election despite having lost his congressional seat in Ohio to remapping.

Two congressional seats are being eliminated due to the states' population decline, WJW-TV, Cleveland, said.

The former Cleveland mayor who has served eight terms as a Democrat in Congress said he was relieved to discover 57 percent of his current constituents were included in the new 9th District, which runs along the Lake Erie shore from Toledo to western Cuyahoga County.

The remapping means he will likely be running against U.S. Rep. Marcie Kaptur of Toledo, a Democrat who has served her district since 1982.

"It really pits two extraordinarily strong voices for the middle class against each other," Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern told Politico.
