WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's disapproval rating has hit a new high at 55 percent, a poll found.

The CNN/ORC poll found 55 percent of Americans said they disapprove of how Obama is doing in his job as president, while 43 percent said they approve.

The poll found just 39 percent said they approve of how the president is handling unemployment and 36 percent said they approve of how he's handling the economy.

Less than 10 percent said they think Obama's policies have improved the economy while 39 percent said the policies have prevented the economy from being in worse shape than it is, 37 percent said they've worsened the economy and 15 percent say they've had no effect.

At the same time, CNN reported, the poll found nearly eight of 10 respondents said Obama is likable and significant majorities said he's compassionate, hardworking, has a vision for America's future and fights for his beliefs.

The poll, conducted for CNN by ORC International, is based on telephone interviews with 1,038 Americans Sept. 9-11. The sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
