MLK Jr. Memorial dedication set for 10/16

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- The dedication ceremony for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial, postponed because of Hurricane Irene, has been rescheduled for Oct. 16, officials say.

Ed Jackson Jr., the monument's architect, said Sunday the ceremony will "absolutely . . . definitely" take place at 11 a.m. Oct. 16, the Washington Post reported.

The event may differ from what was originally planned for Aug. 27, Jackson said.

"We have to go back and confirm all of the speakers and entertainers that were planned," Jackson said.

Thousands of people from across the United States were anticipated to attend the August dedication of the monument, which features a 30-foot sculpture of King.

The memorial, which opened to the public Aug. 22, is situated between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, not far from the Washington Monument.
