NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A New Jersey judge has refused to dismiss charges against a former university student charged with secretly taping his roommate having sex with another man.

Former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, 19, is charged with invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Friday.

Ravi's roommate Tyler Clementi, 18, committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge just days after learning his sexual encounter in the dorm room he shared with Ravi had been secretly recorded by a Web cam on Ravi's laptop computer and watched by Ravi and others.

Middlesex County Superior Court Glenn Berman, in refusing to dismiss, ruled there was evidence to justify the charges and ordered another hearing for Oct. 20 to set a trial date for Ravi.

The case has become a focal point in the debate on cyber-bullying and the intimidation of gay youth.

Ravi, who left Rutgers after his arrest in October 2010, has pleaded not guilty.
