Sgt. Steven Little of the Columbus police said the man was believed to have broken a window to get into the apartment, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Two of the three Ohio State seniors sharing the apartment found the body Monday on the floor in the living room, Little said.
Police found blood in a bathroom sink and bloody towels, suggesting the man tried to stanch the bleeding. They also found some indications he moved items around, apparently trying to continue the burglary.
In the end, he gave up.
"He just sat down on the floor and bled to death," Little said. "The burglar had a bad weekend."
A preliminary examination of the body suggested the man died no more than 24 hours before his body was discovered Monday afternoon.
