Mom arrested for blowing pot smoke at baby

GIBERT, Ariz., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Police in Arizona say a woman arrested on suspicion of child abuse blew marijuana smoke into the mouth of her 10-month-old daughter to stop her from crying.

Authorities said Jessica Callaway, 21, of Gilbert was arrested after she was videotaped on her roommate's cellphone hitting her baby, The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday.

Police said the video shows Callaway picking up the baby and spanking her, and when the infant continues to cry, Callaway screams at her to "shut the (expletive) up before I kick you in the mouth."

The roommate told police she and Callaway had been smoking marijuana and Callaway blew smoke into the baby's mouth several times.

Callaway told police she was having a bad day and would never hit her baby hard enough to leave marks and that she blew smoke into her baby's mouth to get the baby to stop crying, court records show.

After posting bail Callaway was released with a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 6.
