NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Sunday comics on Sept. 11 will salute America on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of a decade ago, USA Today reports.
"The Sunday comics offer the biggest canvas for us," said Brendan Burford, comics editor for King Features Syndicate. "Readers look to the comics page to reflect the national conversation and, on Sunday, Sept. 11, that's going to be the conversation. I think the impact is going to be profound."
USA Today notes cartoonists have commemorated the terrorist attacks before but never to this extent, with 93 strips paying tribute.
Comics from Creators Syndicate, Tribune Media Services, Universal Press Syndicate and the Washington Post Writers Group will participate in "Cartoonists Remember 9/11."
Readers will find Blondie and Dagwood saluting the American flag, Spider-Man offering praise to a firefighter and the dog Earl of the strip Mutts saying to owner Ozzie, "Heal."
"This is a chance to do something bigger and in color," said Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell. "It's going to be an interesting Sunday morning to open the papers and see what everyone comes up with."
The cartoons will be available online at cartoonistsremember911.com after being published. The original artwork will be on display at the Newseum in Washington, the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, the Toonseum in Pittsburgh and the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York.
