WASHINGTON, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A Michigan lawmaker has introduced a measure in the state Legislature that Muslims charge is a veiled attack on Islam's Shariah law.
The measure, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Dave Agema of Grandville, Mich., mirrors legislation introduced in more than 20 other states that prohibits citing foreign laws in U.S. courts, The Washington Times reported Tuesday.
Michigan is home to the largest concentration of Muslims in the United States and Agema's bill has sparked charges of racism, xenophobia and Islamaphobia.
The NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Council of American-Islamic Relations have all threatened to file a lawsuit if the measure is approved.
Victor Begg of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan called the legislation "hogwash" and said it is clear there is an underlying agenda.
He suggested that "American Laws for American Courts" legislation currently moving through more than 20 states is part of an organized and well-funded "witch hunt" aimed at Islam and Muslim-Americans.
