ORANGE, Calif., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A 31-year-old woman was in custody in California Tuesday after allegedly dropping her 7-month-old son from the fourth-story of a parking garage.
Sonia Hermosillo, a mother of three, was jailed in Orange County on one count of attempted murder and was expected to be arraigned Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Her son, Noe Medina Jr., who landed on a concrete walkway at Children's Hospital of Orange County, was in critical condition at University of California Irvine Medical Center, the newspaper said.
Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams described Hermosillo as "calm, stoic, no emotion" when she was pulled over Monday night while driving a sport utility vehicle.
County officials said Hermosillo was being given a psychiatric evaluation was confined in a cell by herself.
Police said it appeared she had picked the hospital garage at random as it appeared the baby had never been a patient at the facility.
The Times reported police said they believe they know why the mother dropped her child but would not discuss it.
"We are sure that this act was done on purpose," Adams said.
A former neighbor said the infant may have had some kind of birth defect and photos showed the boy wearing some type of helmet, the Times reported.
Police said the baby was not wearing a helmet at the time he fell.
Hermosillo's neighbors said the suspect has two young daughters.
