TRENTON, N.J., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A top state official says Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis may not run for a New Jersey state Senate seat because he does not meet residency requirements.
U.S. District Judge Noel Hillman is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter Friday, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno determined that Lewis, 50, a Democrat, does not meet a four-year residency requirement. Guadagno is a Republican who has been trying to get Lewis removed from the ballot since April, when the former track star began campaigning, the newspaper said.
Lewis is originally from Willingboro, N.J., but lived and voted in California as recently as 2009.
"Absent a decision by the court to the contrary, Mr. Lewis has not met the four-year residency requirement," Guadagno said.
"This is nothing short of a brazen attempt to dictate the result of the election," Lewis' attorney, William Tambussi, said.
