ANNAPOLIS, Md., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Maryland plans to open a state park honoring Harriet Tubman on the 100th anniversary of the slave turned abolitionist's birth.

The park and visitors center will be located on land the state acquired in 2007 about 10 miles from Cambridge on the Eastern Shore, The Baltimore Sun reported. Officials announced Tuesday Maryland has been able to put together the $21 million funding for the park and say it will open in 2013.

Cambridge already has a Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center. But there has long been a push for an official state site.

"It is awesome," said Valerie Manokey, 75, a Tubman descendant who lives in Cambridge. "It's like something inside you that was growing, and you knew someone would see the significance and it would blossom and now you see the buds on the tree. I pray that I'll be here to see it."

Tubman was born on a farm near Cambridge. She escaped in 1849, made her way to Philadelphia and then returned over and over to Maryland to bring out her family, friends and eventually at least 70 people, earning the nickname "Moses."
