GIG HARBOR, Wash., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A Washington jury found Pierce County partly responsible for injuries suffered by a woman mauled by a pit bull that had been the subject of earlier complaints.

The jury last week awarded $2.2 million to the family of the woman who was attacked four years ago by a neighbor's dog who entered her house through an open patio door.

The News Tribune in Tacoma said the jury determined the owners of the pit bull were 52 percent responsible for the incident. Pierce County received 42 percent of the blame because animal control officials took no action even after getting more than a dozen complaints from people in the neighborhood.

The injured woman, Sue Gorman, was assigned 1 percent of the blame. She suffered bites to the face and arms while trying to pull the pit bull off her two Jack Russell terriers.
