CLEVELAND, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A judge in Ohio's Cuyahoga County imposed the death sentence Friday on serial killer Anthony Sowell on the recommendation of a jury.
Sowell, convicted in the murders of 11 women, listened for an hour to statements from family members of victims before Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose delivered his sentence, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.
"In my opinion you're going to hell for your actions," Donnita Carmichael, daughter of murder victim Tonya Carmichael, told Sowell. "Anthony, you are an animal and hell awaits your arrival."
"The only thing I want to say is that I'm sorry," Sowell said earlier in the week. "I know that may not seem like much. And I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart. This is not typical of me. I don't know what happened. I can't explain it. But I know it's not a lot, but that's all I can give."
Ambrose imposed the death penalty for each of the murders, plus various other sentences for charges related to rape, abuse of a corpse and other crimes, the newspaper said.
Ambrose said Sowell's case will be automatically appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court.
