Missing Lake Tahoe diver's body ID'd

CARSON CITY, Nev., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A body recovered from California's Lake Tahoe has been identified by authorities as a diver who disappeared in the lake 17 years ago.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said Monday the body of Donald Christopher Windecker, 44, a city planner in Reno, was pulled from the lake after a diver discovered it July 24 at a depth of 265 feet. Lake Tahoe, at 1,645 feet, is the second-deepest lake in the United States.

Windecker had been diving with a companion when he disappeared off Rubicon Point July 10, 1994. A Gazette-Journal article at the time reported his friend said the pair had descended to a depth of about 100 feet and when they started to return to the surface Windecker appeared to have trouble with his equipment and began sinking.

The friend said he tried to help Windecker but ran low on air and had to return to the surface.

Efforts to find his body at the time had been fruitless.
