Officer Nick Armstrong was hospitalized in critical condition while officer Tim Doyle was reported in stable condition Tuesday night.

Police Chief Steven Allender said all three officers were wearing protective vests when they stopped four suspects in a car at a city intersection.

One of the men in the car pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the officers, Allender said.

He said the shooting suspect, identified only as a Native American male in his 20s, underwent surgery Tuesday night.

About 5 blocks from the shootout, a video store reported a bullet came through one of its outside walls hitting two DVD cases.

No one in the store was injured.
