Pilot crashes, swims 15 miles to safety

HARBOR BEACH, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- An injured pilot who swam 15 miles before being rescued after his plane crashed into Lake Huron was in good condition Wednesday, officials in Michigan said.

The Cessna 150 piloted by Michael W. Trapp, 42, of Gouverneur, N.Y., crashed 17 miles east of Harbor Beach, Mich., Tuesday night and he had to swim 15 miles toward lights on the horizon until he was picked up by the fishing vessel Eagle's Next Wednesday morning, the Saginaw (Mich.) News reported.

Trapp had been headed for Eau Claire, Wis.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Jorgensen said Trapp was in good condition after being transported to Harbor Beach Hospital.
