Four still missing in Norwegian massacre

OSLO, Norway, July 24 (UPI) -- Norwegian authorities used a miniature submarine off the coast of Oslo Sunday to search for at least four people missing after an island massacre, police said.

Norwegian King Harald and Queen Sonja attended a solemn service at the city's main Lutheran cathedral along with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to mourn the dead from Friday's bombing and shooting spree. The death toll Sunday rose to 93, CNN reported.

At least 96 others were injured in the attacks that began with a car bombing of the prime minister's offices and a 90-minute shooting spree in the midst of a Labor Party youth rally on the nearby island of Utoeya, the BBC said.

Police arrested Anders Behring Breivik, 32, on the island. His lawyer, Geir Lippestad, told media his client surrendered when he ran out of ammunition.

Lippestad said his client told police he was responsible for the attacks, but didn't claim any guilt, The New York Times said.

"He has said that he believed the actions were atrocious, but that in his head they were necessary," the lawyer said.

Breivik was to make his first court appearance Monday.

Meanwhile, police were poring over a 1,500-page manifesto purportedly written and posted on the Internet by Breivik soon before the attacks.

The author said his goal was to "seize political and military control of Western European countries and implement a cultural conservative political agenda," The Times said.

Indications were that the attacker acted alone, although investigators said they were still looking for accomplices.

New law lets gays marry in New York

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Gays and lesbians across New York state took advantage of a new law that made it legal for them to get married Sunday, officials said.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the bill allowing same-sex marriage into law on June 24.

More than 820 couples signed up to get marriage licenses in advance in New York City and more than 100 judges across the state volunteered to officiate at marriages on the spot, The New York Times reported.

"This is long overdue," said Mayor Matthew T. Ryan of Binghamton, N.Y., who was to officiate the marriage of two couples.

Ryan invited gays from Pennsylvania to come to Binghamton to marry.

"It really is a great day for all of us who believe in inclusiveness and equal rights for everybody," Ryan said.

"As the hours tick by, we're getting more and more excited," Brian Banks, a 33-year-old special education teacher from Albany. He planned to marry his partner of seven years, Jon Zehnder, a high school math teacher.

"Even though we've always viewed ourselves as married, to have there be no asterisk next to it, it'll just feel really good," Banks said.

The new law isn't for everyone. Town clerks in at least two rural areas have resigned, saying their faith precluded them from marrying gays, the Times reported.

The National Organization for Marriage planned demonstrations at the State Capitol, outside Cuomo's office in Manhattan and also in Buffalo and Rochester.

Car bomb kills six in Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, July 24 (UPI) -- An explosive-laden car rammed a military convoy in Yemen Sunday, killing at least six people, including the attacker, officials said.

The attack in Aden, Yemen's business capital, injured another 20 people, the Yemen Post reported.

The bombing occurred near an Air Force camp in the Al-Mansoura district as the convoy was departing for the Abyan province, where government troops have been fighting insurgent Islamists for nearly two months, the report said.

Heavy fighting broke out after the explosion and hundreds of government forces were scouring the area for suspects, witnesses told CNN.

It is the second attack on security forces in the area in about a month.

Gunman, 5 others dead at roller rink

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas, July 24 (UPI) -- A gunman opened fire during a party at a roller rink in suburban Dallas Saturday night, killing five people before apparently taking his own life, police said.

The bloody mayhem broke out just after 7 p.m. at Forum Roller World in Grand Prairie, Dallas' KXAS-TV reported.

Besides the dead, at least three other people were wounded, KXAS-TV said, while KDAF-TV in Dallas reported four people were wounded.

The victims' names had not been released.

KDAF-TV reported police said most, if not all, of the victims are Asian, and Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye said the shooting spree was the result of a domestic situation, possibly between a husband and wife during the private birthday party.
