WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- The Obama administration says it wants a U.S. judge to order the return of a classified document accidentally given to the American Civil Liberties Union.
The document shows how the government determines who are the most dangerous detainees in Afghanistan, The Washington Post reported. The administration also wants the judge to order the ACLU not to make the document public.
The Post said the document is a military form used to record the findings and recommendations of detainee review boards at a detention center near Bagram Air Force Base, Afghanistan.
In a filing in U.S. court in New York Wednesday, a senior Defense Department official said release of the document "could have significant deleterious repercussions with respect to our diplomatic relationships with Afghanistan and various other countries."
For its part, the ACLU insists the document was improperly classified secret and it should be allowed to post it on its Web site, like thousands of other documents through the Freedom of Information Act.
The ACLU notified the government of the accidental release May 25.
The ACLU is scheduled to respond to the government's filings July 29.
