WASHINGTON, July 13 (UPI) -- Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is far ahead of his GOP presidential primary rivals when it comes to using Twitter, his campaign said.

The Republican presidential hopeful has posted 2,611 Twitter messages in the 29 months since he joined the microblogging site in February 2009, Politico reported.

Gingrich has a whopping 1.3 million followers and sends an average of three posts a day.

His three closest competitors from the 2012 GOP presidential field are former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who each have about 60,000 followers.

Politico said Gingrich's posts reveal a side to the former speaker that doesn't come out on the campaign trail or in news accounts.

For example, when the famed polar bear Knut died at the Berlin Zoo, Gingrich shared his condolences on Twitter.

"Sad news! Just learned knut the polar bear died suddenly at 4," Gingrich wrote. "Callista and I visited him in Berlin when he was 5 months old -- he was cute."
