Church collapses in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, July 13 (UPI) -- A contractor said he was able to warn members of an Indianapolis church to get out when he saw signs the building was about to collapse.

Luis Vaz was inspecting the ceiling at the Hebrew Pentecostal Sabbath Keepers church Tuesday so he could do an estimate on repairs, the Indianapolis Star reported.

"I saw the walls were being pushed out, windows were separating, and the corners were lifting," Vaz said. "Not even 15 minutes, and boom."

No injuries were reported, although about a dozen people were in the building when Vaz noticed the signs.

The building was put up in 1954 by East Park United Methodist Church, replacing an older church from the 1920s. The Pentecostal congregation acquired it eight years ago.

While parts of the building remained standing, Vaz said the entire structure would probably need to be rebuilt.

"We are going to build," said Bishop Herman Davis, who has been pastor of the congregation for 32 years. "We trust in God. But we don't know where we are going to be."
