PONTIAC, Mich., July 12 (UPI) -- A Michigan man killed a decade ago was dead before his body was castrated, a medical examiner says.
Kanubhai Virani, deputy chief medical examiner for Oakland County, testified Monday in the trial of Robert Nowak that Troy Moross of Madison Heights apparently was tied up and killed by a blow to the head. Lack of blood indicates his genitalia were excised in a "precise surgical fashion" after death, he said.
Nowak, 51, is accused of killing Moross, 26, in 2001 and leaving his body in a parking lot, The Detroit Free Press reports. He was linked to the killing by DNA evidence last year after his arrest on a theft charge in California.
Defense attorney Lawrence Kaluzny argued Moross was killed by a murderous "sex cult" operating in a home in Rochester, Mich.
Federal agents investigating the cult have seized thousands of photos of mutilations and torture, and one agent is expected to be called as a defense witness.
Virani was asked to review Moross' autopsy report in 2005.
"Part of it is torture, part of it is pleasure, or a combination of that," he said of surgical tools and sex toys found in the home.
Nowak faces life in prison without parole if convicted.
