Skydiver dies in Hawaii

MOKULEIA, Hawaii, July 11 (UPI) -- A skydiver died Sunday after colliding with a fellow skydiver and plummeting to the ground in Hawaii, authorities say.

The victim was identified as Ashley "Ash" White, an instructor at Skydive Hawaii in Mokuleia, Honolulu's KHON-TV reported.

"During the free fall portion of the jump two of the jumpers collided with each other, rendering Ash White unconscious and he fell to his death from there," Skydive Hawaii President Frank Hinshaw said.

White was not wearing an automatic opening parachute, which could have saved his life as it would have opened while he was unconscious, unlike White's manually opening parachute.

"He was a wonderful guy, full of life; he loved everything about the ocean as well as sky diving," said Hinshaw. "He had a boat he went out fishing, we'd all share some good fresh fish when Ash went out."

This is the sixth fatality during Skydive Hawaii jumps since it opened in 1988.

The police were still investigating the accident.
