WASHINGTON, July 3 (UPI) -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Sunday he believed the seemingly draconian cuts faced by school districts across the country will not be as bad as feared.
Walker said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that the new budget in his state leaves the foundation of education intact while avoiding some potentially unpleasant tax hikes.
"I do believe every week, every month that goes by, people see the benefit," Walker said. "They see the scare tactics didn't work. They see that we've got a balanced budget that freezes property taxes for the next two years."
Walker predicted reforms, which included a sharp clash with the teachers union over collective bargaining, could result in some districts actually having more revenues available to hire teachers and reduce classroom size.
Walker agreed that education funding would probably be a campaign issue in the upcoming presidential election, but agreed with three other governors on "Face the Nation" that compromises that lead to a balanced national budget were more important.
