The driver, Edwin Carrasco, ignored warning shouts and plowed into the women, said witness David Gomez. Casal was thrown through the air and suffered massive head trauma, witnesses and a family friend said.

The victims were taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where Casal was pronounced dead and Emmanuel was in stable condition with broken ribs.

Carrasco was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, unsafe backing and failure to exercise due care, the New York Post reported.
