MIAMI, June 28 (UPI) -- Voters in the Miami-Dade, Florida, area went to the polls Tuesday to select a new county mayor.

Former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez and former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina are running to replace county mayor Carlos Alvarez, who was overwhelmingly recalled by a majority of voters in March, The Miami Herald reported.

Both Gimenez and Robaina are Republicans who ran on the pledge to cut the size of county government and employee salaries, as well as roll back the property tax rate increase that led to Alvarez's ouster, the Herald said.

The mayor's post is non-partisan.
